Main Street’s
Children’s Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest
and Concert on the Bandstand

| Fayetteville
Main Street recently hosted a children’s sidewalk chalk
art contest and concert on the bandstand in conjunction with the
Leaves of Lincoln bike ride.
Over 50 children, ranging in age from pre-kindergarten
to twelve, participated in a sidewalk chalk art contest. Prizes
were awarded in three age groups and Dominos provided pizza
and soda for all participants. Winners in the kindergarten and
below category were: Hollend Crawford, first place; Anna Marie
Thorton, second place; and Hold Richardson, third place. First
through third grade category winners were: Conner Phillips,
first place; Mary Grace Hamilton, second place; and Erin Bergman,
third place. Winners in the fourth through sixth grade category
were: Samantha Burnett, first place; Ryan Eldridge, second place;
and Kattie Jaffre. The event was coordinated by the Promotions
Committee, chaired by Victory Smith, according to Susan Hancock,
executive director of Fayetteville Main Street. Due to previous
commitments, I was unable to provide much help in pulling this
event together, but our volunteers pitched in and “made
it happen.” Volunteers contributing to the effort included
Victory Smith, Jeff Smith, Judy Brewer, Kathy Hobson, Marie
Caldwell, Nola Monks, Heidi Richardson, Anna Lindsey Keen, Ashton
Story, Cortney Story, Alice Palacio, Brenda Barnes, Nadine Moore,
Keller Monks, Marisa Thorton, Marie Thorton, Jerry Yates and
Susan Hancock, stated Smith. A special thanks goes out to our
judges—Terri Crawford, Patsy Crawford, Margaret Briley,
Judy Conley, Pat Young, Paula Throneberry and Margaret Hale.
Donations were received from Dominos Pizza; Gina Warren and
Fayetteville Public Utilities; Joe Smith and Town Country Realty;
Jeff Smith and Reli Title, Inc.; Wal-Mart; and Joanna Caldwell.
Area favorite, Tony Mason, performed a variety
of musical selections from the bandstand. Tony has been performing
in the Tennessee Valley area for over 30 years and has quite
a following, stated Hancock.
It
was a very pleasant, relaxing day around the square for everyone.
This was the second year we’ve worked with the coordinators
of the Leaves of Lincoln event and hopefully we will be invited
to work with them again next year. Leaves is a wonderful event
for our downtown business district and Fayetteville in general
and we were just pleased to be a part of it all.
